“With a video shot last year in Kyiv, Ukraine, the rapid-fire shots of friends having a series of awe-inspiring nights out on the town is underscored by Fog Lake’s mournful falsetto, reminiscing on the better days of relationships that have since evaporated.”
Rising electronic producer dj poolboi has shared the nostalgic video for his latest lo-fi single, ‘where are you now (feat. Fog Lake)’, shot last year in Kyiv, Ukraine. The single features Canadian singer Aaron Powell aka Fog Lake who has been making a name for himself in the lo-fi scene. Fog Lake has collected just under 24 million plays across platforms with his melancholic sound and helped write and perform ‘where are you now’ which has been taken from dj poolboi’s impressively diverse upcoming album, stay just a little while longer (digital and vinyl) to be released on the 18th of March via Unbelievably Spectacular.
Fog Lake tells us about the creation of the single: “dj poolboi contacted me with an instrumental he wanted me to sing on and I really connected with the music and atmosphere of it all. I usually write in first person but I tried instead to write from the perspective of someone who was struggling with their idea of love and the evolution/disintegration of their feelings towards family, friends and loved ones, some lost to time and others about to be. I’m extremely happy with how it came together and was honoured to be a part of it.”
Speaking of the collaboration, dj poolboi tells us: “I fell in love with Fog Lake’s music the first time I heard it. At the time I had been writing more piano and acoustic instrumentals and reached out to Aaron to work together. I wanted a break from writing electronic focused music to maintain my creativity and sanity. The vocals and lyrics he wrote are equally haunting and beautiful; coupled with his guitar and wonderful vocal melodies. It was a pleasure working with him, and I couldn’t be happier with the result.

A rainy day calls, with a cup of tea by your side as you ponder what was, what could have been and the immense present with ‘where are you now’ gently playing in the background. [On dj poolboi and Theresa Ng’ambi’s ‘malo okoma’] “Together they transformed the track from an already vibrant and rousing piece of house music into a joyous love letter to Ng’ambi’s home, all sung in the Chewa language and delivered in a Zambian folk style”COMPLEX [Fog Lake’s] “‘Jitterbug’ is downbeat and overcast as it slides through nostalgic memories”Stereogum It can be disconcerting to first hear Fog Lake’s tin-can-on-a-string vocals against richly textured piano and guitar, but as “california” goes on, the contrast morphs into something uniquely beautiful and bittersweet. The Fader [dj poolboi’s ‘la nuit n’en finit plus’ is] “s a dreamy excursion into evocative electronics.” CLASH Magazine “With the new wave of lo-fi hip-hop setting a relaxed soundtrack across the world, there are not many artists that do it quite as rapturously as Austin, Texas-based artist dj poolboi.”EARMILK Follow dj poolboi: Website – Facebook – Twitter – Soundcloud – Youtube – Instagram – Spotify Follow Fog Lake: Facebook – Twitter – Soundcloud – Youtube – Instagram – Spotify |
